What is Patina to you?
Chipping, peeling layer upon layer
of old shabby paint?
The gorgeous finish on a beautiful armoire or table that has been
hand rubbed for years and years?
The cracks, chips, dings?
The imperfections and wear and authentic finish
that show that something has been
loved & appreciated over the years?
To me, it is all of those things.
This old mirror hangs above the bathtub in my master bathroom.
Several of you have asked to see more details on it since I shared
my vintage bathroom remodel & I thought it fitting to share it since I have a
PATINA STYLE giveaway right now.
I found it in an abandoned antique store
along with quite a few other extremely crusty, dirty finds that I love!
I don’t remember how much it was, but I think it was about $5.00
I loaded it in my car, brought it home and hosed it down
(literally!)
and discovered the most beautiful old colors
hidden under the years of dirt.
The seller thought that it was far too damaged to be worth anything.
That the mirror was ruined with it’s old spottiness,
loss of silvering and hazy clouded reflection…
yes, it’s true that it never looks clean and sparkly…
but it has great character and charm
and I love the mottled and streaked finish the mirror has.
As well, there are those would say the painted finish is ruined
and should be stripped or repainted.
That it looks more shabby than fabulous.
I love the old colors in the paint-
layered green, yellow and turquoise…
& the way the old wood peeks through in areas.
It only needs a bit of sealing to keep any more of those
layers of colors from falling off.
🙂
This mirror has a pretty perfect shabby patina in my book!
