If you are new to my blog- you might not know that when we moved into our home
the grooved knotty pine wood walls everywhere you looked
were a huge selling point for me.
I love them and knew that they after a little bit of paint- they would be perfect
I love them and knew that they after a little bit of paint- they would be perfect
Gallon after gallon of paint, one room at a time
we painted those wood walls to add some much needed light to the rooms
and I love how they turned out.
we painted those wood walls to add some much needed light to the rooms
and I love how they turned out.
Well, I love how most of the rooms turned out...
I have a confession.
In one of the rooms, I used an off-the-shelf, pre-mixed white paint.
I know.
What was I thinking?
Well, first- I was on a time crunch with out-of-town guests coming and so white was easy.
But, I wanted the 'perfect' white.
With just enough warmth to brighten a room but not too much of a yellow undertone
to make it looked aged.
I started with taping paint chips to the walls and staring at them for hours.
Eliminating that one and adding that one back in.
I wanted to choose something perfect but I was under pressure to get the guest room painted before guests arrived.
So yes, I walked in and bought the white right off the shelf.
After quickly painting, I tried to embrace that stock white-
but the blue undertone was too cool for me to love.
So, that neglected guest bedroom has been patiently waiting for a makeover into a charming French cottage guest bedroom
and you guessed it, it is finally getting one.
Here's the before- and the before -before showing the room.
Before- before- when we toured the house.
Those knotty pine walls were dark, dark, dark and the ceiling was as well.
You can see just how dark they made the whole room.
What it looked like after the off-the-shelf white, paint-it-quick coat
Brighter and cleaner but basic and bland.
I didn't love the blue undertone but since it was a room that wasn't used but once in awhile
it has sat on the back burner for getting a new look.
it has sat on the back burner for getting a new look.
I was excited to have the opportunity to work with Sherwin-Williams on a paint makeover
and I had an idea of what color I was leaning towards.
Actually, I had an idea of a couple colors that might be perfect and I tried them out before I purchased any paint.

Actually, I had an idea of a couple colors that might be perfect and I tried them out before I purchased any paint.
Nope- I didn't paint the room in samples to see what I liked. I tried something different.

I used the Sherwin-Williams Color Visualizer.
Talk about awesome-
you simply load a photo of your room into the Color Visualizer and choose what color you would like to try on your walls and drag the paint color to your photo.
you simply load a photo of your room into the Color Visualizer and choose what color you would like to try on your walls and drag the paint color to your photo.
For the first color- I picked SW 0028 Caen Stone.
I simply dragged the color to the wall, and then it showed me a preview of what my room will look like. You can drag the color to several walls- the ceiling, the floor- truly easy.
Up next- I tried a soft blue called SW 6534 Icy.
I have to admit- I loaded several different photos and played with paint colors for each of them.
I am loving it and will definitely use this tool over and over again. No more painting a whole room and standing back and hiding your face knowing the color is not the right one and it doesn't look like what you imagined.
I am excited to be using Sherwin-Williams Emerald™ paint for this project- which I have heard amazing things about.
So I am off to get painting and give this room the makeover it deserves and I will be sharing the reveal very soon!
As well- how would you like a chance to enter to win a $50 Sherwin-WIlliams gift card?

ReplyDeleteMy living room - I am sick of beige walls with wood trim. kcannon@anwsu.org
ReplyDeleteI hear ya. I have painted several rooms and stood back and didn't like the color. I would have to paint my living room because it is one of "those" rooms I don't like. The tan color looks yellowish.
ReplyDeleteOur bedroom is in dire need of some color -preferably a rich, soothing blue. I have used the color visualizer and chipit!, from Sherwin Williams quite a bit and they are really helpful!
ReplyDeleteJust what I would need to get a push on getting some projects done. I've used the online color visualizer before and loved it.
ReplyDeleteI've used all Sherwin-Williams paint inside and outside my home, and I am still not done! It's a great give-away.
ReplyDeleteMy master bedroom was painted electric yellow by the former owner. It is a pain in the eye that needs a Sherwin-Williams paint job to fix.
ReplyDeleteI used SW paint on our new deck railings and it went on like a dream! Next.....the laundry room!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe color visualizer is a fantastic boon to those, like me, who are "project addicted"!!! My next paint project....the master bedroom!
ReplyDeleteSo excited to use this tool. We're moving in 2 weeks and there are a few rooms that need makeovers! This will save me tons of time and the possibilities are endless!!!
ReplyDeleteJust moved in with my Gram (good deal all around, help around the house for her and affordable rent for me) and am staying in the bedroom designated for us grandkids when we were little. I actually got to design it originally, about 20 years ago, and it was great! But the bright yellow walls and border of primary colored handprints aren't quite my style anymore, so it's the room I would paint.

My husband put it up in the dining room to "hide" the finger prints and mess from the kids, but the kids are now all in their forties!!!!! He lovesssss they way it looks and has a whiney fit whenever I talk of painting it, BUT the time has come, and gone, and come, and gone again, but now is here and I'm gonna do it!!!!
ReplyDeleteI would love to paint our master bedroom!

ReplyDeleteI would absolutely, positively paint my family room white, just like you did~over dark knotty pine that I am so tired of! Pick me please!!! haha

ReplyDeleteI love SW visualizer and have used PROMAR 200 around my house for 13 years. Now it is time for an update in my guest romm. I would love to try the Emerald paint! Thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter's bedroom needs to be redone. She has had major health issues & her room should have a more "grown up" look to it.
ReplyDeleteI have a large kitchen which runs along the back of our home. Last year I changed the wallpaper to a gorgeous blue and white Thibaut toile. Now here's the challenge . . . I knew if I wallpapered all the walls in this toile it would prove to be too busy, so I papered the back wall containing the glazed cream and umber cabinets, bump out, soffets and an adjoining wall which houses a white and glass country French china cabinet. After much consideration I decided to faux finish the other walls in a soft gray. It looks good, but now I want to change it. My challenge is, what color should I paint the walls? The background of the toile is white, but a soft white. I don't want to paint my walls white at all. I also don't think I want to paint them blue to compliment the wallpaper unless it's the perfect blue. I'd like to paint them a lovely cream color, but will that look odd against the background white of the paper? And yes, there is one adjoining wall. I'm a long-time customer of Sherwin Williams so I know they'll have the answer. Please I need help!
ReplyDeleteMy bathroom is being remodeled and I haven’t decided on a Sherwin Williams color yet...... this would be the best win ever.
ReplyDeleteI will be painting my spare bedroom soon. Thanks for the giveaway!

ReplyDeleteI would love to repaint my living room. Today, someone is coming out and laying new flooring in this room. A beautiful new paint job would be so nice to have with a new floor!
ReplyDeleteMy kitchen!!! It is in dire straits!!!
ReplyDeleteI have my own bedroom to paint....it's been "riverstone" blue forever and I can't stand it any longer! I need to refresh this room ASAP!
ReplyDeleteI am about to paint an entire house! Hope to close on it in 2 weeks.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for those of us who cant make up our mind. When we repainted our bedroom, there were 10, yes 10 stripes of green on our walls for months. I wanted to see the sunlight on each shade. Glad we did, we love the color we selected. Now we are about to re-do our stairs. Off with the carpet and on to hardwood stairs. But they are against a bright accent wall of red. This would give me the best opportunity to view the wall before we paint. I Love Color and would love to play with this concept. Im sure my husband would appreciate not having to paint 10 diffetent stripes. Now, is there one that shows me what to hang on the wall?
ReplyDeleteThanks to you and Sherwin Williams for sharing this with us.
