There’s something especially magical about an outdoor gathering in winter — when the air is crisp, the light fades early, and details tell the story.
Winter Gatherings
For this winter gathering, church pews were placed beneath the open sky, creating a setting that felt both nostalgic and quietly romantic. Their well loved patina brought warmth and a lovely old world charm. For a romantic style wedding, we set these up under the oak tree with a flower covered arch and twinkling trees as the backdrop- but of course, you can style a gathering simply. With fresh greens and flowers and candlelight, the gathering felt less like an event and more like a moment meant to be savored. If you’re dreaming of hosting something similar, here are five styling tips to create a winter gathering that feels whimsical, welcoming, and effortlessly beautiful:

1. Let the seating set the tone
Unexpected seating — like vintage church pews or wooden benches — instantly adds character. Their chippy patina brings warmth and a sense of story. For a similar look- picnic benches or similar are perfect.
2. Style with winter greens and seasonal florals
Evergreens, cedar, eucalyptus and pine aren’t just for Christmas. They feel timeless and seasonally grounded for winter gatherings. Tuck loose bundles along your benches or table edges, letting them drape naturally rather than arranging them too perfectly.

3. Layer soft textures for warmth and romance
Bring in some wool throws for warmth, pillows on benches for a bit of cozy and flowing ribbon to add softness against winter’s starkness. Adding layers invite guests to linger longer and make the space feel warm rather than cold.
4. Use candlelight to soften the setting
Winter light fades quickly, so lean into it. Grouped candles, lanterns, and gentle glow create intimacy and a touch of magic as dusk settles in. I love placing candles on a vintage platter or antique silver tray for a unique and safer way to enjoy real- or just go with faux for no fire worries at all.

5. Keep the palette quiet and intentional
Muted neutrals, soft greens, and weathered wood tones allow the setting to breathe. A restrained palette feels romantic, nostalgic, and perfectly suited to winter gatherings. For this setting, our seating is finished with a chippy rosy toned off white that brings and abundance of warmth and a touch of sweetness.
6. Create a simple, inviting table setting
Choose natural linens, stoneware, and mismatched glassware to keep things relaxed and romantic. Layer in taper candles or low votives so conversation stays front and center — nothing too tall, nothing too perfect.
7. Anchor the gathering around a fire pit
A fire pit becomes the heart of a winter gathering and brings much welcomed warmth. Arrange seating nearby, keep extra blankets within reach for guests to grab as needed, and let the flicker of firelight bring all the winter ambiance magic for you.

I hope these tips give you some ideas for setting up a beautiful gathering this winter. Stay tuned for a whole lot of fun and stories about these church pews. Happy Monday friends.
