There is a method to the madness when it comes to decorating a Christmas tree- sometimes it is simple and easy and sometimes it is very detailed. And something I am asked about often is how to get a designer look for a Christmas tree- but without the designer price. Today I am breaking down the very simple and easy steps to this tree and how it came together.
Easy Designer Look Christmas Tree

I start with a beautiful tree of course. This is the Silverado Slim from Balsam Hill but you can apply these steps to any tree you are working with. This tree is pre-lit so I am not breaking down steps of adding lights.
Add large ornaments first. Fill in the inner branches and any ‘pockets’ the tree might have with larger ornaments. Those big ornaments look great nestled in and tucked rather than out and about if that makes sense.

Up next, layer your smaller ornaments in various sizes. I like to use large, medium and some smalls all over the tree and keep the top of the tree mostly smalls and tiny ornaments. I keep layering until I get the ornament coverage I like.
Then it is time for the detailed ornaments. Things like shaped ornaments, finials, drops and garlands. Add the drops and finials further out on the branches so they can dangle and fill in areas. Drape crystal or pearl or such garlands and add those detailed ornaments like snowflakes, etc. I also like to add bows and ribbons so you will often find those layered in as well.
Step back and take a look

Once you get all your ornaments and layers added- step back and take a look at your tree and see where you might need to add a little bit more or take something away that makes it feel too busy.

Add a tree topper- or don’t
I don’t always add a tree topper to my trees- truth be told, more often they are left without a topper. I prefer the cute little natural looking top they have and will just add a simple bow or nothing. It is all about your preference and there is no right or wrong way to do it. So if you would like a topper, choose one that fits your theme or that has special meaning for you.

Underneath the Tree

One of the places that is often overlooked when creating a ‘designed’ or ‘designer’ look tree is the underneath. A pretty layer under the tree layered with beautiful packages that coordinate with your overall design or color scheme creates a stunning display. Of course, you may not have presents ready for under the tree if setting up early- you can wrap faux presents for the look if preferred.
