Remember that kitchen update we have been working on over here?
Yeah, that one.
The one that started with gusto and then was put back on hold again by several things?
Well, it has been coming along more in a bit by bit instead of slam dunk fashion.
But the good news- we are almost wrapped up with most of the heavy lifting over here
and working on finishing touches.
There have been quite a few changes to original plans and thoughts
with this one. One thing leads to another to another to another and all of a sudden
that simple couple hour project turns into a week long project with way more involved than you intended on doing.
So, let’s just talk about inspiration in kitchens. Countertops, backslashes, colors, etc.
Today- it’s the backsplash.
In our kitchen- there is a beaded board paneling piece along the backsplash. It was originally put up to cover up the missing board areas behind the cupboards from when the old cloth wiring was replaced.
Have you been into Lowes recently to look at the options in their kitchen department? I can tell you pretty much each one they are showcasing right now. 😉 I have stared at them for probably hours at this point as well as searching inspiration from favorite magazines.
Here are a few of my favorites that are classic as well as pretty
and a couple interesting options that I thought were neat.

Beadboard
We put a beadboard backsplash in the kitchen when we updated before and I love the look.
We even put it out in the cottage as well.
I would recommend actual beadboard over beadboard paneling to help with moisture
I would recommend actual beadboard over beadboard paneling to help with moisture
and keeping it clean if that is the direction you would like to go in.
Ceramic Tile
Ceramic tile is a classic backsplash and countertop material.
When we bought our house- one of the things they had started to work on was a ceramic tile
backsplash in the kitchen.
This one is colorful and looks beautiful with the white cupboards.
Subway tile
Subway tile is a classic choice. It is clean and streamlined and vintage in its look. The bathroom in our bedroom originally had a subway tile wall behind the sink- but not in a vintage good way fashion- it was orange and red subway tile.
Yeah. I think that white or marble or glass is much better.
Simple patterns can also be made using subway tile if you are looking for a bit more pizazz.
Tumbled marble or Travertine
Tumbled marble and travertine is such a mix of rustic and elegance to me.
I do love the look of it- and love that texture is doing most of the talking.
So pretty.

Shaped tile
Hexagon or detailed shaped tiles are a popular choice when looking for something with a little more interest in the backsplash. They are really popular right now- as are colors in backsplash tiles.

Glass Tile
Glass tiles are everywhere in the kitchen design centers and magazines right now.
It’s hugely popular and probably really easy to keep clean.
Brick
Not my first thought for a backsplash material- but I have to say- am loving this look. However
in one of our other homes we had a brick backsplash behind the stove area-it wasn’t the easiest to keep looking fabulous so you would probably want to embrace the rustic charm of this one.
Other choices I have seen that are different and not so usual?
Panes of glass over paint- very modern and sleek.
Rocks
Talk about adding texture and interest- it’s really pretty but not sure how this would hold up.
We have gone back and forth of what we would like there- and honestly, my number one thought with this kitchen and most every project in this house has been how to update it while keeping the home and kitchen original character.
So-yes… actually the backsplash is almost finished over here
and I just bought paint.
I am getting pretty excited to share the new look the kitchen is getting with you soon
So do tell- what is your favorite type of backsplash in a kitchen?

Ooh, all so neat! I can't wait to see what you picked.. I'm guessing it's the bead board if you're sticking to the original character, but I guess we'll find out soon! My favorite is the either the white subway tile, or the tumbled travertine in the subway form.. I'm a subway no matter what kind of girl 🙂 Also love the bead board for that cottage look. xo Jen

LOVE beadboard. In WHITE! I would have it in my home if I could, but already we did our backsplash using thin strips of tape and plaster to make faux diamond tiles. We taped out the pattern (the tape is where the "grout" would be for tiles). Then we spackled on the plaster, which gives the look of stone. Before it dried, we removed the tape. Then I painted–alternating black with a creamy white. It was a bit of work, but VERY inexpensive… and looks like big, pretty stone tiles.

Lové the brick one, yet I would do it in the soft creamy whites and grey's.
Love all you inspire.

I'm thinking about beadboard because it's not permanent and I change my mind so much. I can't wait to see.

Right now I have a tumbled marble but when we redo our kitchen, I might go for a subway.

I love white subway tile! But in my house when I change it I might just do the classic square white tile because that is what most of these had originally. I also really love the glass over paint. But I wouldn't go in that direction in my house.

These are all so pretty in their own way! If I was going strictly on looks and not maintenance, I really love the look of the brick. My other two favorites would be the bead board and the subway tile. Looking forward to seeing what you've chosen!

My personal fav is travertine or rumbled stone………….but I do like white subway tile, too.
Beadboard works well for a truly country farmouse look, but not for my kitchen – can't wait to see what you chose!

I am eager to see what you chose, but that glass over paint is so dreamy — and so impractical. That's not for a cook's kitchen!

I'm thinking that when we redo our kitchen, we will go with marble in a herringbone pattern. But we will not be remodeling our kitchen until next year, and I have been known to change my mind. 🙂
I have considered many of these choices that you have highlighted here. We had white painted beadboard in our last home. Loved it! Also, I have considered white painted brick, colorful subway tile, that beautiful marble flower pattern, or square ceramic tiles for our new home. There are so many beautiful choices out there. Can't wait to see what you did!!

Hi Courtney!!!
I can't wait to see the reveal of your new kitchen!!! I know it's going to be absolutely gorgeous!!!
My favorites were the subway tile in the original way. It just seems so clean.
Then the brick, but, not so much white showing. I've loved brick since I was a kid in Montreal and relatives lived in buildings that were over 100yrs old and they always had brick throughout their place.
Finally the glass over paint. Using a blue background just caught my eye right away. I would love a back splash like this one because I would use the same color blue paint.
Have a great weekend!!!

Your right, each one is so beautiful in their own right, it is hard to choose. I love exposed brick, but is has to be or look pretty authentic, there is nothing worse than cheap imitation brick. Subway tile is such a classic look! The stone is really usual but it takes a certain style to pull it off. The bead board and color reads so warm and friendly to me. I can't wait to see what you do!!

You can always incorporate hand painted tiles (Mural) with subway tiles for extra interest and beauty.

I believe the backsplash can make or break a kitchen remodel. Sometimes the selection is tough if a bossy countertop is involved. Personally I love tile be it ceramic or glass. (not so much on the tumbled stone) I thought the blue square tile looked fabulous in your example but they pulled it off well. I think keeping it over the stove and going vertical makes this work. The other one that I loved was the gray and white marble counter top with the rather busy glass backsplash. Beautiful, but again, not in every application. It really is so important to take in all aspects of the room when choosing a backsplash.

Once it is all done you will be very happy and the struggles to get there will be forgotten.

I'm having the exact same hesitation… Though I'm ruling out stones as there was some in the kitchen before I began remodeling and they are very difficult to keep clean in a kitchen.

Courtney, years ago I fell in love with this one piece of tile. I would have bought more had they been available. Someday I hope to replicate it because it feels so French country cottage. How can I send you a photo of it? It is antique looking Matt tile with raised images. Indescribable and stunning. It now hangs over my stove. It's one of the first things I see every morning as it's next to the coffee pot. Ask for the backsplashes you showed the stone one really struck me. Maybe it's my love of Brooks and creeks and natural stone ala Frank Lloyd Wright
