I am one of those people who see stories happening in the moment in random things. By random I mean vintage pieces. Blooming trees. A chair set somewhere as it is being moved- but that inspires a photo. The way the sunlight lands on the floor or on the top of a couple of flowers on the table outdoors. Storytelling magic happening. As my eye sees those little glimpses, I see stories and start snapping photos to capture them.

Storytelling with photography is one of my favorite things- and is something I am quite passionate about. Today, I am dipping a toe in the storytelling photography waters here on the blog to share the story behind this vignette from my most recent book ‘IN BLOOM’.
Storytelling: Vintage Table & Camellia
Our camellia tree is one of our most favorite trees on our property. It is absolutely huge and over the years has grown to reach almost to the attic window. Every winter it is covered in dainty little buds that swell and grow and start to get a rosy pink color before they begin to open and cover the tree with an abundance of beautiful little blooms. Camellia flowers aren’t huge- they are delicate little layers of petals but they create a spectacular blooming moment when they open up. And as the older blooms drop and the next wave of new blooms open, the ground is carpeted underneath with a lush layer of pretty pink petals. Together with the flowers on the tree, this blooming moment is full of magic.

Of course, I am drawn to capture the magic with my camera and setting up a vignette is a favorite thing. Sometimes it involves a single chair with a bouquet of flowers or stack of books. A seating arrangement or a table setting or even a simple bike parked in front. This post is an excerpt from a project I am working on about Storytelling with photos. If you would like to be on the Early Bird list to be one of the first to know more about Storytelling with Photography- Don’t miss signing up below.
Today I am sharing 3 tips on what I captured here.
Capture with the background
This capture shows how majestic the camellia is and how much incredible beauty it is showing off.

Close up of the table top
A close up of the happenings. While we can see the magic in the full view- the close up shows us the details and also shows a slice of the table top with the delicate floral decals.

A Floral ‘moment’
A capture of one of the farm chairs with the flowers on the seat is pure delight for me. It isn’t a snippet from the overall or a close up of the table details- it is another magic filled snap. By setting the flowers on the chair, it gives them their moment to shine.

All together, these 3 captures tell a story about this setting without saying anything.

your farm chair brought a tear to my eye. my Grandma’s were painted yellow. in the 30’s she said most people were only able to get a green paint so she was very proud of her yellow ones!
WOW! The light, the shadows, color, patina! Just beautiful💖.
And i love how the candle flame shows movement.
Oh that camellia and the way you captured it! So gorgeous! Do you know what variety it is? I would love to add one to my garden. Thank you.
