This & that and everything else from the week that was.
Silkie Hens
We recently adopted 6 silkie hens that were looking for a new home. Two of them are older and not laying eggs any longer and the other 4 are about the same age as our other chickens.
Something you may not know is that when you introduce any new members to a flock – you have to quarantine them for about a month to make sure that they don’t bring any illness or diseases. Since our flock have all grown up together since they were just 2 weeks old- we followed the precautions. And all was well- we mingled the ladies with the others and after about a week- they were all getting along.
Smoky Fiery Skies
A view of the smoky fiery skies recently. Summer brings fire evacuation readiness. Meaning- we have boxes and bins of photos and important papers long with crates for the goats and chickens and anything else we can stuff into the cars ready to go. California has fire season every year- some years are worse than others. This year there have already been quite a few that have brought a lot of destruction and damage- but the Dixie Fire is really taking it’s toll. It isn’t anywhere near us- but the smoke has been traveling all over the state from the Bay Area up to Oregon and over to Utah and beyond. Really ready for cooler temperatures and much needed rain.
Silkie Colds
But then we heard one of the roos crow while we were out by their area. And it was not a usual crow. It was very quiet (which is actually desirable haha) and it sounded ‘snurgly’ for lack of a better word. I hold the chickens daily and had not picked up on any congestion- but this little guy was definitely congested that day. And while holding him- we noticed a second one was the same. After about 4 days- we had several that were congested. We called the vet and they were not too concerned and told us to watch them and that they would come out if they were not getting better in a couple of days. We have had a ton of smoke in the air here with all the fires and so, they said it might be that or the irritation from the fan or crazy heat of the summer. Or it could be a cold they are all sharing. The good news- after about 3 days of treating them with something like ‘Vapo-rub’ they perked up and were back to normal. Right in time for another one to get it and start all over. This week though- seems everyone is back on track and running around (and crowing) like crazy.
And on a side note- Clover looking a little wild. She loves to scratch her horns on the hay bale – and looks a tad crazy sometimes.
Stacks of pretty
I just got in a stack of samples of pretty things for the shop. I am obsessed with the florals and colors and hoping to bring the products to the shop for you soon. Stay tuned for the Sample Sale – I have a limited amounts of these pretties on hand currently that will be available for sale soon.
And on that note- the linen slipcovers are fingers crossed going to be here in the next 2 weeks. There have been so many delays and issues- so once I get the ‘in the mail’ notice- You can sign up for pre-sale purchase opportunity notification HERE for anyone who wants to grab theirs ahead of time. They are currently backed up and running about 8 months out on fulfilling custom orders like this one. I will also be adding a few other pretty things that should be arriving at the same time.
Wandering
If you love fabric and crafts- you will love this post and ideas.
My diet and all those miles on the bike will go out the window – but a few bites just might be worth the extra work. I mean- just look at this coffee and fudge ice cream cake.
And loved this idea and details on how to paint vinyl and laminate floors- we have a temporary replacement floor in the cottage that might be getting a quick refresh before replaced this winter and this is perfect.
Coming your way this week:
Autumn inspiration & hot August nights at the same time. Along with a little bit of Christmas. It is a crazy mixed up seasonal world over here (and I love it)
Wrapping up photos of the guest cottage kitchen today and will be sharing the latest update out there. And recently did a quick change in the guest cottage bedroom as well.
Happy Weekend all.
