I am all about all the things whimsical when it comes to stylings for entertaining. Gatherings filled with all the pretty things like flowers, candles and cozy ambiance are always on the list- but adding in something that is whimsical takes your setting from ordinarily lovely to extraordinary. And today we are talking about 5 ideas and tips for creating a beautiful whimsical summer soiree.

Whimsical Summer Soiree
Just the title of that talks to me. I am ready to jump in and create something full of all the ambiance and magic! Creating something that is a little over the top and full of unexpected elements is a favorite thing for me. That is why I say I thrive on whimsy and adding that dash of oomph to a setting. For this table from my new book In Bloom- it was all about layers of lovely and oodles of ambiance. I am sharing a couple versions of the table today to break down some of the different tips.
The Cloth
Linens. Place settings. Glassware. Flowers. All the little details add up to create a charming and wonder filled setting. I started with a vintage floral cloth for the table and layered the plates, napkins, glassware and more on top. I wanted to echo the flower filled magic here- so that is what I did. Flowers underneath. Flowers on the place setting bits. Flowers in the vases. All together- a blooming beautiful setting. A secret here is that your cloth doesn’t have to be a table cloth-you can use a vintage sheet & can often find old new stock- or even several yards of fabric.

The Location
The location of your table will make a difference when it comes to the ambiance overhead. Under a sturdy tree branch- you can add a chandelier or string lights. You can also use a stand above the table to add your lighting too or think outside the box- use a fence for lighting, set up some tall torch stands for draping string lights on or add them to your pergola or house if you have a place to add a hook.

The Candles
Candles create a cozy warm glow that is perfect for a warm and welcoming ambiance. I almost always use real candles when taking photos but if I am setting the stage for a gathering with friends and family, faux candles works perfectly. You can turn them on, leave them be and not worry about them all evening. Since they are safe to use – you can add even more of them in many places. March them down the table. Tuck them into lanterns. Echo them on wine barrels or tables in the backdrop for even more oomph.

The Flowers
Fresh are always wonderful for adding that extra scent to a setting- but if you have some realistic faux, they are beautiful too. These are a mingle of grocery store blooms and fresh picked roses- keeping it simple doesn’t mean boring.

The Music
Often overlooked, the music and background magic is something that adds another layer to a lovely gathering. You can use a stand alone portable speaker, your phone tucked into a spot or if indoors, your regular sounds system or tv – create a playlist that fits the mood you are going for and set it on repeat so that the music will continue all evening long.
