Italy is such a beautiful country. Full of colorful houses and flowers, tall mountains and expansive views and so much charm everywhere you look. The old villages of Italy are one of the best places to experience all that beauty all rolled into one place.
We visited several villages in the Umbria region over several days. Though that wasn’t the main focus of our stay there, we wanted to explore the area and of course had to stop at the must see’s like Spoleto, Spello, Trevi and Assisi. How can you pick one that you love the most when all the villages are so beautiful? Sharing the first two villages today- since there are a ton of photos to share, will break them up into a couple of posts in case you are planning your own travels and would like ideas for where to visit.
Spoleto, Italy
A charming village- Spoleto was full of hustle and bustle with locals in the lower village areas but up in the church and castle areas not so much.
We don’t grab maps of the villages when exploring- mostly just wander and see what we find and what inspires.
After exploring the castle area, we stopped by the church for some photos and lucked out that there was hardly anyone there exploring. As I mentioned, we have been surprised by how few tourists we have seen on this trip-a bonus for photography for sure!
To know: Spoleto is a quiet and charming village. There were folks wandering around exploring – but it was largely quiet in most areas which meant you could really soak in all the beauty. While the castle above was not open at the time we were there, the views were wonderful out across the countryside and so, definitely would recommend making the trek up. The parking proved difficult- we ended up with a parking ticket which is apparently not unusual for the Umbria region of Italy. If you can taxi in and be dropped off & picked up- that would be an easy fix.
Spello
Spello was another beautiful village in the area that our host encouraged us to visit. Since we rented a car to explore the countryside areas- it was simple to navigate stops at several villages in a day.
Spello is known for the flowers that are on repeat everywhere and considered one of the most beautiful villages in the Umbria region. And they definitely did not disappoint.
We wandered the village and snapped photos but mostly soaked up the beauty first hand since it was so bright and hot.
Had we been able to visit again early morning or in the evening, surely would have captured more of those beautiful flower filled moments to share.
To Know: Spello is a beautiful village that is full of flowers and foliage around every corner. We loved the buildings built with rocks- something that the Umbria region is known for. Of course, being a flower and garden loving kind of girl, Spello spoke to my heart with their vibrant displays. To do: Wander the streets and look down small corridors for beautiful flower moments and soak in the views out over the Umbria valley.
