A stop at the supermarket inspired me to create a summer flower arrangement last week. And the best part? It is so easy to put together. Today I am sharing some of my best tips for using grocery store flowers to create a summer flower arrangement that looks custom designed and expensive.
Grocery Store Summer Flower Arrangement
Summer flower arrangements are always fun since there are so many beautiful flowers in season. This one was inspired by several bunches of flowers at the supermarket.
Flowers
From the grocery store:
- Rosy peachy dahlias
- White Spider Mums
- Blush Spray Roses
- White Spray Roses
- Large Peach Roses
From the garden:
- Allium
- Oregano
- Sweet Peas
- Dried Echinacea
- Foxglove
Creating the Arrangement
One of the fun things about this arrangement is the container it is in. I used a large antique bowl that was a recent thrift store find. Since the bowl was deep enough- it worked perfectly. You can place a florist foam inside or use tape, etc. to create a ‘frog’ to hold the flowers in place with nearly any type of vase.
Tips for arranging
Tip: Start with the base
By starting with the bottom or underneath of the arrangement- you can create a ‘landing’ of sorts that covers gaps and also supports your flowers as you place them.
Tip: Place larger flowers next
The larger flowers are going to create the fullness and main structure of your arrangement. I started with the spider mums and spray roses. They are sturdy flowers that are also full. Up next were the standard roses for the same reason.
Tip: Fill in the gaps
Step back and look at your arrangement to see where there might be something missing. I tucked in more of the softer spray roses and rosy dahlias to fill in the areas where there were holes.
Tip: Add longer flowing flowers
This is a fun one and depending on how large you would like your arrangement to be- the longer flowers create a beautiful ‘drape’ with a bit of sass.
Tip: Add some height
Finally, create a bit of height. Use a sturdy tall flower and some greens to create a bit of height. This can be merely a tiny bit taller than the other flowers for more of a ‘rolling hill’ kind of height. Or if you prefer- much taller for a little bit of drama.

The arrangement is beautiful! I was wondering what you do to make the flowers stay fresh the longest? Do You add anything to the water beforehand? how often do you replace the water and do you trim any of the stems to provide for a fresh cut throughout the lifespan of the arrangement?
Courtney says
I have used the florist packs for some flowers- but have noticed mainly that it is fresh clean water that keeps them lasting longer. I replace water every other day or so and do trim the leaves below the water line- sometimes all of the leaves
