We have been working away on a few changes out in the cottage- and it has been a bit slow going but we are finally making some progress.
Today I am sharing a peek at the new lighting in the kitchen and also sharing a bit about the renovation plans we have in store. The little cottage is a bit more rustic than our main home- but it has a ton of charm all it’s own.
And forgive my photos today- we have been without power with the safety shutoffs and in the cottage without any lighting to help balance – it does make it difficult to capture as it should.
Before
And the kitchen- well it used to be even more rustic than it is now. Here is where we originally started back in the day when we were first giving the cottage kitchen a mini makeover and making it into a functional kitchen again.
And that cupboard? It is antique. We found it in the basement of the main house and believe it may have been original to the little cottage back.in.the.day. but have no idea. This is what it looked like when we dragged it out of the basement before quite literally taking a hose to it to get 60+ years of dust and dirt off of it.
You might remember from my first book that we added double chandeliers and several small shelves to the back wall.
Lighting Changes
But recently with some renovations and design changes for something fun coming up in the little cottage- we went in a lantern kind of direction for the moment.
One of the most fun things about working in print and design is flexing those design muscles. Like the black paint on the bookcases- the lighting is a completely different look to what we had in here.
I am not 100% on if they will stay here- I have to be honest. I have a couple of spots I was thinking of using them in- but I do like the look- and that it is completely different in feeling.
I love how the carriage lanterns fit the style of this room so perfectly- and I love the brassy undertones that shine through and the size- not too large or small. These are from my partner Lamps Plus- you can find them HERE
The Feeling
The kitchen has a whole different feeling just with that one change in lighting- but with a bunch more changing- it isn’t near done yet. Lots of things in flux out here currently.
While double chandeliers is a look that I will always love (and between you and me will likely go back to once this project is wrapped up) I also wanted to really play up the more rustic English cottage vibe that the little cottage has right now- and those lanterns in the kitchen really do add that feeling here.
Other Changes
We have a few other changes in the kitchen and also the dining area. We have a large farmhouse table in this spot currently- and above it- a golden amber crystal covered chandelier. I wanted to point out this chandelier much like the vintage chandeliers in the kitchen in the house that you guys ask about all the time.
It has a very similar size and look- and for those who are looking for something similar for your home- this might be perfect for you.
You can find it HERE
Renovation Plans
As I mentioned- these rooms aren’t finished just.yet. We are actually tackling some fun renovations in the entire cottage as we speak. We are replacing the counters in the kitchen. They were quickly put in years ago to get things up and running but were never the final choice for out here.
We are also changing the sink area- another quick, easy and inexpensive project that we did to get things working but now updating with something more in the style that I love.
And we are giving everything a fresh coat of paint- the walls, the floors, the ceiling- which is always a game changer right there.
And the cottage backyard. I have never shared it here. BUT- it is happening folks. I will share all those updates as we get them in. And stay tuned for more about where these chandeliers and lanterns land for good.
What do you think about the new lighting in the cottage?
You can also see the rest of this floor in the cottage and the grand silver leaf chandelier that is crystal covered perfection HERE.
And we aren’t done with the lighting updates just yet… stay tuned!!
Happy Wednesday all.
*Disclosure- I worked with Lamps Plus on this lighting change- but all opinions are my own.

Love, love, love the cabinet/cupboard you saved. I just found a similar one with *sliding* glass doors at the Restore store (for $50!). It’s painted gray and the top and glass doors are covered with wallpaper from about 1930. I will scraped that off the glass when we get it up but for now it’s protecting the glass from knocks or shattering. Thanks for posting your photos — it helps me feel more confident about my rash decision to buy this funky piece.

But it was so great to go to Chapter 3, Read the back story, look at all the pictures and see the BEFOREs. 💟Beverly
