The comfy chair is definitely a thing over here. I have chairs that are vintage and beautiful. Chairs that are vintage and delicate (aka not for sitting but look pretty) but not a whole lot of chairs that are vintage and comfy. And to be honest, while watching t.v or visiting- a comfy spot to sit and relax is a must. And so, the search was on for a pair of vintage chairs that were French Country style, beautiful and charming and all that- and comfy. A tall order really- but I bumped into a listing on marketplace that seemed to fit the bill.
Vintage French Country Comfy Chairs
The listing was for a pair of chairs with a delightful floral ticking pattern- which instantly caught my eye. I love anything and everything floral ticking. I took a closer look and saw the carved frames, the plush cushions and the details like the fabric lines matching up – which is a good thing. I couldn’t tell from the listing if the fabric was a vanilla or a gold – to be honest, I was hoping it was lighter rather than darker- but when we saw the chairs, we did like the more gold fabric on them.
Vintage or Modern
A pet peeve of mine about todays furniture? The size. I am not a fan of oversized chairs and sofas and tables and you name it. I love the more dainty lines and look of vintage furniture. These chairs are on the larger size for what we are used to- but my husband requested chairs that were comfy as well as pretty and even though they are larger than we are used to- they are not nearly as large as some modern versions
About the Chairs
The sellers were so sweet-we actually chatted with them quite a bit while we were there. They were British citizens and were selling their California home. They had bought the chairs years ago and since the house was not their primary residence, they were barely used and in pretty much brand new vintage condition. The tag indicates Ethan Allen Versailles around 2000- which some of you had thought was the case. So barely vintage but definitely vintage look.
What we love
The comfy factor of course. I do appreciate that even though they are not 100% the size I would usually gravitate towards- they definitely fit my aesthetic well and look beautiful by the fireplace. I absolutely love the floral ticking fabric and the more saturated color works well with my gold mirrors and other elements as well.
The comfy factor is really a game changer. When you sit down, you sink into these chairs and while they are not huge-they are big enough for me to sit cross legged on them.
What we are planning on tinkering with
We would like some brass wheels on the front legs. To be able to ‘pop’ the front up just a bit and also, because I love the look. I am also planning on adding a couple of small lumbar pillows for a bit of extra.
