Do you remember grasscloth wallpaper?
That nubby texture covering the walls of all the cool offices and houses back.in.the.day.
which was a Tuesday in the 60’s or 70’s maybe?
😉
I remember grasscloth well.
My dad had his own real estate brokerage that was decorated in very typical man decor.
Several big desks that took up half the room.
An oversized indoor houseplant in the corner and of course a Sold real estate sign
that was the big important artwork on the wall.

But the thing I remember most about visiting his office-other than sitting on the floor playing while he worked- were the walls.
They were covered in typical fashion of an older rented office building that was trying to stay
somewhat neutral
On the walls was a neutral grasscloth wallpaper.
(He did not put it up- but the older office he was renting
already had it)

The texture fascinated me actually. I loved it.
I remember that I loved to rub my fingers over it and see the basket weave design and see and feel all the detail it had.
Honestly, it did seem to really help warm up that somewhat you-know…
slightly boring decor that the office had. (sorry dad!)

So even though grasscloth wallpaper was soo blah in the 80’s and 90’s it seemed
grasscloth started coming back into fashion for the home
several years ago now
and some argue that it never really went all the way out of style~
it was just re-imagined for each new design aesthetic.
Whatever happened – it is out there and enjoying a new appreciation even now.
It was everywhere in High Point.
On the walls.
On furniture pieces.
It seemed like every time I turned around I was bumping
into another use of grasscloth in a showroom that was different than the next.

Another thing?
Todays grasscloth does not seem to be the same your (my) fathers grasscloth
It’s beautiful and neutral or wears a bit more fashion.

It’s elegant.
It can be modern – or more rustic in its use in a room

Who knew that good old grasscloth was so versatile?

To me- it is warm and inviting as a texture on the walls
and it adds a new layer of charm to furniture.
I loved the shimmer of this grasscloth papered chest wearing a beautiful metallic grasscloth at Caracole Home ~ so pretty
and love this metallic covered wall too

I am actually loving it and have decided if I were to find the perfect spot-
I would totally add some grasscloth in my decor
and I just might be doing that. 😉

I love grasscloth, always have. Transitional over the decades, and classy.

I remember winning a few rolls of grasscloth wall covering from a radio station in the 70's. I used it on a screen partition and a low dresser in an Asian themed room. I love the metallic look as in the photo above.

I really love the look of the metallic grasscloth. I used it in my den in the early 80's and loved it.

The house we just moved into has grass cloth wallpaper on the walls in the study. The house is 12 years old and the wallpaper was installed when it was built. It is still in perfect condition and looks fabulous!

I remember it too, but had forgotten all about it b/c it seemed, like you said, boring and confined to places like real estate offices, haha. I love the rooms you showcase, just pinned several! My favorites are the neutral grasscloth inside moldings around a room and the brighter colored grasscloth (is it simply painted?) that really hilite a room and add that incredible texture! Thanks for reintroducting us to this oft-forgotten decorating gem 🙂

I love the look, but how do you clean/maintain it?

I had it in our past house and loved it. Our house was contemporary with the living room, den, dining area and kitchen all being open to the central two story fireplace. The neutral grasscloth was on one wall in the living area and it had touches of navy in it. The cream sofa had navy trim as well as other navy touches. I've always thought grasscloth was a classic
