What is your front door color personality?
Basically- what does your front door say? Is it bold and beautiful- welcoming guests with a hearty hello? Or maybe soft and quiet with a timeless elegance and charm? Maybe it is a drama queen or a wild child- full of vibrant color that pops and seems to shout a welcome all the way to the curb. Or maybe it is somewhere in between.
Front door decor and color is such a personal choice and it really does set the tone for your home when welcoming guests. But what if you don’t know just what your front door personality is? That is okay too. Today I am sharing 9 favorite front door colors for a welcoming look and a whole lot of curb appeal.
Soft & Subtle
One of the most asked questions about front doors over here- what color is on our door? This is Benjamin Moore Boothbay Gray. And you know- sometimes it looks more blue than gray and sometimes more gray than blue. It is one of those colors that changes quite dramatically depending on the light. For example- the door on the potting shed is Also Boothbay Gray. So if you like blue And gray for a door? This might be the color for you.
Rich Dark Blue
I love a rich dark navy blue. It is right up there with glossy black for a door. This is a door I spotted in Europe and I am obsessed with how beautiful the shade of blue is. Navy is a great choice if you are looking for something that makes a statement but also feels ‘stately’ without feeling too bossy. (does that make sense ?) Try In the Navy by Sherwin Williams for a similar look.
Cerulean Blue
This door would be in the drama queen category for me. When you use a rich bold and bright color like this gorgeous shade of blue- your door is going to be noticed all the way to the curb. Bold pops of color like this are wonderful with a neutral color on the house- and the add a ton of personality. Of course, that beautiful wisteria helps here too. Try Cosmic Blue by Valspar for a similar look
Rich Cranberry Red
Like red lipstick- a red door instantly adds some oomph and dresses up a house. I love a red that has a richness to the shade- like this gorgeous example below. Almost like the color of a cranberry- sunny and bright but with some depth to it. Paired with brass- it is beyond beautiful. For a similar look- try Rustoleum Cranberry Red
A little Sass
Talk about a sassy door- this turquoise is a show stopper that definitely has something to say. If you love wild child sassy color and you may not want to cover the whole house in that color- but don’t be afraid to use your favorite color on the door. This pop works so beautifully because of the neutral color on the brick, black accents and natural touches in landscaping. For a similar shade- try Rushing Stream by Valspar
Burst of Sunshine
A burst of bright sunshine with a sunny yellow. While this yellow may be a bit neon for some- there are so many beautiful shades of sunshine that are lovely on a front door- and yellow certainly makes a statement and welcomes people in with a smile. Try Benjamin Moore Bright Yellow for a similar look.
Another example of navy- as well- and the great thing about this pairing of doors is that it shows just how much difference the front door color makes.
It’s Easy Being Green
Oh how I love this door. Beyond love this door. And something that makes it even more beautiful and really brings out allll those delicious details- that rich color of green. This green is a deep forest kind of green that is stately and welcoming and just plain gorgeous. You can go more emerald or more leaf green for a completely different green look as well. Color Suggestion: Try Benjamin Moore Forest Green for a similar look.
Au Natural
I mean. Need I say anything more about this other than- YES please! This is such a beautiful look- and there is something about seeing the train of the wood versus paint that just feels so warm and welcoming. I might be obsessed. Key to this look would be to make sure the wood is sealed- even if leaving it unstained and in an original shade. With rain, sun, wind, snow etc- those elements are going to damage and unfinished wood. I would also make sure to add those protective (and beautiful) kick plates at the bottom as well to keep the door from soaking up too much moisture.
Simply White Or Gloss Black
If you want a classic, elegant and welcoming look- you can’t go wrong with a simple white or gloss black. Those usual go to colors are perfect for creating a beautiful look without a lot of fuss. Go with a shade of white if your house is a tad busy with color already- and the standard gloss black or slate gray is perfect for adding a touch more drama.
All Shades and Colors
There are so many options for a statement front door color. As we work on the refresh on the courtyard side of the cottage after the storm damage- we are choosing some new colors and paint to give it a bit of a boost. I will share more about what color we decide to go with.
What about you? What is your front door personality? What do you struggle with when deciding what color to use on a door? Would it be helpful to also narrow down and compile a list of a few favorites of each color to give some ideas of where to start? Let me know and we can tackle it in an upcoming post.
Happy Wednesday all.

Where were all of these beautiful doors and homes? Europe? Savannah? Charleston? I am so enamored of them all!!!
Courtney says
They were in Europe- Paris and London mostly.

Our door in the alps is between the very first (French) picture and the dark blue–RAL5023 “fernblau”. It matches all the shutters on our 3-storey white stone house, which has bittersweet chocolate massive wooden beams and balconies and wrought-iron grilles on the street-level windows.
All colours in europe are on the Ral charts, so you don’t rely on paint manufacturers and their zillions of names.

Sounds like a much better way to be able to find the color you are looking for. Your home sounds just beautiful!!

Alas, we have a plain white door with little windows on top – a builder’s new house door. Back in MA in my childhood home and where my husband and lived for many years, we had an antique door with oval window as our front door. The house was built by my grandfather and my dad was born in the house. We were moving to Canada (ended up just staying for 9 years), and as our house was in a bad state, and friends were purchasing it to put up a new house, we had the door removed and took it with us. As it didn’t fit in the American Square house in Canada, it was used as a decor item in our dining room. It’s red. Now that we’re back in the States and living in SC, we have a new house. The door does not fit here either. It’s too big and I refuse to trim it down to fit, so it sits on the landing halfway up our staircase. It’s a very heavy door. Maybe at some point we can install a prettier door sometime, but my antique red door will have to be a decor item. And that’s ok!
