It is official- we are kicking off our Trees of Christmas series this year! And the first tree decorating idea is all about a little bit of whimsy and Charlie Brown style charm with a Vintage Putz Houses Christmas Tree.
Vintage Putz Houses
I was thinking about little vintage houses and ideas for them for Christmas while working on my Christmas book. And though I scoured marketplace, vintage sales and thrifts- oftentimes you can’t find Christmas elements during the year other than during the season. And so, I started watching listings on ebay and Etsy and I bumped into one that had a whole village of charming little houses.

There are always a couple that specifically catch your eye- but this listing was full of the sweetest little Putz houses that all spoke to me in one way or another. So, you know I was on a mission to bring them home to enjoy in a styling.

Vintage Putz Houses History
I am not a big history buff on the very detailed history- but a summary from google sums up the love of Putz houses. If you aren’t familiar with Putz houses-they are little cardboard houses and often decorated with glittery snow, ‘stained glass’ windows and come in all kinds of itty bitty size but full of charm styles. Originally a design from Germany in the 1880’s- they became very poplar in the U.S. starting in the 1920’s. There were also very inexpensive back in the day- sold at the 5 and dime stores where people collected them like crazy and then they were later manufactured in Japan. They now make all the reproduction houses- cardboard, wooden, metal, etc. and vintage style houses are popular with crafters looking to create their own little Christmas villages.
Putz Houses Christmas Tree Decor

Aside from the little houses on the tree, I used a drizzle of tinsel, vintage ornaments and velvet ribbons and rhinestone garland to dress this wee charmer and also dress up the mirror.
Tree Stump Tree Stand
Remember all the damage from the crazy winter storms a couple of years ago? Well, we have a few piles of cut logs around the property (even more after last years storms) and so, I asked my husband to make a simple tree stand using a log. I will share a detailed how to on the blog on Wednesday- it is so easy to do and I love how it turned out!

Love everything you do! I bought Etsy velvet ribbon, a lighted 5 ft. Flocked tree and pretty silver and gold small glass ornaments and a prarl garland to do the tree like one in your Christmas book. But, then fell and broke my hip. So now in rehab, but hope to be home before Christmas to do my tree!
happy Holidays to you!
I so love this tree Courtney!! Now I will be on the lookout for these houses!!!
Yes Courtney! I remember those houses. In fact, I am from Germany and we had a relativly big cardbord church with exactly that glimmery snow. The design was from a specific WELL-KNOWN Church in the Region of the Erzgebirge, from where all those wooden handmade carved decorational object are from. We could even lid it with a battery.

I have always loved Putz houses and this looks so cute and simple. I usually use them as a small village but I could try this. My only question is what did you use to hang them.
