Yes- my grandmothers house was over the river and through the woods.- literally 😉
She loved hosting dinner and would start getting ready for weeks ahead of time
gathering ingredients for her special treats.
By the time we arrived her kitchen was filled with the smell of pumpkin pies
and her counters were covered in yummy treats like her special fudge and deviled eggs.
She had the most amazing recipes and loved cooking.
I remember when I was first married and living in another state
I raved about that fudge to my new husband and I tried to make her special recipe.
Several times honestly
but it was just never quite right like she would make.
Grammy was one of my closest friends and
I absolutely treasure those memories of holidays at her house
and the special treats that she would make.
As she got older the Thanksgiving tradition at her house continued
even though it changed a bit
When she got dementia, she was no longer able to cook and bake up a storm
and hosting Thanksgiving dinner was difficult
So the family did the baking and the prepping with her recipes
and brought the food over to them
I remember my grandfather shaking his head one year
as we brought out the potatoes and stuffing and cranberries and pies.
He said we had thought of everything and he thanked us
But we were the ones who were thankful to be able to continue the tradition
at their house with them
Treats- like deviled eggs and cookies are on the menu of course-
but I think the hands down favorite all around is her potato casserole.
Made with potatoes, cream cheese, sour cream and garlic salt
|
All I can say is prepare yourself and hit the gym ahead of time
they are that.good.
Add the cream cheese and sour cream a little bit at a time
and continue to blend
Truly simple to make and absolutely delicious.
I don’t even follow the recipe to a T anymore- it’s one of those recipes that you
make and it always turns out amazing.
Your kitchen is beautiful and what beautiful memories you have of your dear grandparents. Merry Christmas!

My favorite Christmas memory was my grandmother's Lefsa recipe. My grandmother was born in Norway and always made Lefsa for us. I have never been able to make it like my grandmother and cherish the memories of the days I got to help her make it with the special grooved rolling pin. When our family went to Norway to visit relatives, I had Lefsa at the museum in Oslo and it was almost like my grandmother's.
Enjoy Christmas with your family and all your traditions.
