Simple and sweet and so perfect for spring. Today we are talking about a spring flower arrangement using one of my favorite early bloomers- hellebores.
Spring Flower Arrangement
Spring flower color palettes can be soft and subtle with pastels and shades of whites on repeat- or they can be bold and beautiful with rich saturated colors and layers of ruffly goodness. This arrangement definitely leans towards the bold and beautiful side-because the flowers on hand this last week were all pops of vibrant pink, saturated greens and rich plum hellebore. So when you have pops of color- you use them for a rich pop of color arrangement. But also, lots of requests for more rich saturated colors for spring florals- and so this is one of them.
One of my favorite early bloomers is hellebore. These flowers are such sweet little charmers and they pop up before many of the others and fill out beautifully. We planted these along the back and side of the greenhouse where they get plenty of shade during the warmer months- and they are blooming away as we speak. They actually started blooming here in California probably at least a month ago -maybe more. But I don’t like to cut them too early and let them grow in a bit and pretty up the bare winter garden before bringing some in to enjoy.
We have several colors of them growing in the garden. A dusty green, barely blushing white and a rich mauve burgundy color. And my husband just brought home some green and purple hellebore marked clearance at Lowe’s (hint hint- check the discounted plant section for bargains.) While the green is a tad bright when it first blooms (and in this arrangement you can see that brightness) it will fade to a lovely softer shade as it dries. Hellebore seems to change color as it grows and ages- something to note.
I paired the hellebores with the ranunculus I shared last week- in both white and hot pink, butterfly ranunculus and also lilacs. It is a bit colorful for my usual style- but in spring- I think you can get away with a pop of pretty to brighten the house.
Where to start
I always seem to start my arrangements with loose greens. The green base creates fullness and also offers a bit of support to the flowers. I used eucalyptus for this one. After you create the base- start tucking in the more rigid flowers- in this case- the lilac. This will help create some stability for the other flowers and also is a perfect way to add a bit of height. Then start tucking your other flowers in as you like.
I love adding some of the butterfly ranunculus – they are a wispy flower that have beautiful petals that brought a rosy tone. The big ranunculus bring alllllll the ruffly details and drama. I left a little bit of the hellebore dangling lower on one side-it brings just that tiny bit of drama that I love in an arrangement.
Perfect for You
The key with anything in design and decor in my opinion is that it be perfect for You. So if you love bold and beautiful and lots of drama- go for it. You prefer soft and subtle and making a statement with layers- bring it on. Flowers are such a perfect way to express your own personality by choosing which ones speak to you.
Every flower is unique and full of personality- just like each of us. So gather up allll those lovely flower layers of charm, beauty and personality and enjoy them. Stay tuned for a more moody look that is a bit more ‘me’ (yep- moody that is haha)
