up quite a bit of time.

Our ‘little cottage’ kitchen
The guest cottage was built probably back in the 1940’s sometime.
An old building on our property~ it has knotty pine walls and ceiling
and concrete floors.
When we bought our house we were so excited to have a separate house on the property to fix up as well.

This part of the cottage was converted from a garage to living space sometime
since the 1940’s and we have been working on giving it a new finished look.
It is an amazing space with tall peaked ceilings and original old exposed beams

We finished the ceiling with planks of wood,
added beadboard and painted the floors for a start.

I wanted the kitchen in the guest cottage to be charming.

Something that fit in perfectly with the age of this cottage
Even though it is comprised of mostly new materials.
we decided to give this kitchen a pretty new look
We picked up a ready to finish cupboard sink base- the RTF cupboards are perfect for
painting or staining in whatever color you would like.

Fresh white kitchen and bath enamel paint did the job perfectly.
We also put in a new sink and faucet as well.

We extended the counters further on one end to allow for a stool/garbage area
and the other side of the base provided the start of the rest of the cupboard area.
Since this is a vintage cottage and we were working with a fairly tight space-
with just a small island on the opposite side
I designed the counters to be a little less deep than standard
which meant that the sink base cupboard stuck out just a bit further
which was okay by me…because I had a plan

I wanted to put turned ‘legs’ on each of the cupboard base and we found the perfect ‘legs’ at Lowes…
though they aren’t really legs… more on that in my next post.
I also decided to put in a vintage inspired cupboard area instead of all cupboards or drawers
Something with old farmhouse legs,
open shelves and a little curtain
with lots of charm with the function

We built the open frame cupboard with 2×4’s and planks of 1x’s for the shelves and
I added a couple of drop cloth drape panels on one end to conceal pots and pans, etc.
I found several antique wood fruit crates and a basket for the other area at the Re-Store.
On the back wall~ we used 2 smaller ready to finish cupboards from Lowes to flank the vintage stove
and then built a couple of small shelves above it to hold spices, glassware and little treats.
Above the open shelf area is a special piece~ a vintage cupboard.
Old and crusty and absolutely perfect- this cupboard was actually in the basement
of our house when we bought it.
Mixed with the new cupboards it is a perfect marriage of old and new charm.
Here’s what we spent on the kitchen portion of this remodel:
3 base cupboards- $280
new sink & faucet $175
Paint $100
drawer pulls $10
3 legs for building the counter $54
wood (2x’s, 1x’s. plywood for counter,etc) aprox. $100
misc.By using some of what we had on hand and incorporating a few vintage pieces we were able to put this little kitchen in on a budget and I am loving how it turned out.

Courtney, this is just gorgeous! It reminds me of the little apartment that we built for my mom that is in our backyard. We didn't put in a full kitchen, just a sink and a few base cabinets from Lowes. We put up beadboard, but I couldn't talk her into a fabric skirt for one of the open cabinets! Love those curtains, too.
