Oh by gosh by golly… it’s time for mistletoe and holly. Or maybe pinecones and cedar. Today I am sharing all about this pinecone and cedar Christmas garland on the staircase and how to get the look.
Pinecone and Cedar Christmas Garland
Seriously so simple- and so charming. I am in love with this garland and how it looks on the stairs- and it took me all of about 10 minutes to put it together.
Fresh Cedar Garland
I started with a fresh cedar garland. You can find these at places like Trader Joe’s or Home Depot – or you can make your own if you have an abundance of cedar clippings and some wire. I just used pre-made garland for a couple reasons. Number one- easy and simple. Number two- I am allergic to cedar so I try to spend as little time handling fresh cut cedar as I can. But- even though I am allergic- I LOVE the look that cedar garland has. I love the drape and organic shape that cedar clippings add. It feels very homespun and classic Christmas to me.
Hang the cedar garland
The first step to this garland was hanging it on the banister. This is a simple old wood staircase banister so I just tack it up with some nails or screws. But if you don’t want to do that- you can use those removable sticky hooks like Command Hooks.
Once the garland was up- I added the big pinecones.
Add Sugar Pine Pinecones
These are what you might call HUGE pinecones. They are Sugar Pine tree pinecones and yes they are as long and big as they look. My husband and daughter collected a basketful of these for me several years ago while they were out driving backroads in the mountains. I tend to leave them out year round- but as Christmas they definitely get even more attention.
I simply wired the pinecones where the garland was attached to the banister.
Add Pinecone Garland
Then it was time to add the pinecone garlands to the cedar. I love these garlands so much I actually ordered extras for the dining room table and mantel. They are a mix and mingle of different size pinecones on a wire garland.
You can see the wire here.
To attach them, I just looped the ends where the garland was attached the banister and followed the drape of the cedar.
I love how this look- those pinecones make the garland feel like it is a designer garland that was special order- and it was literally an under 5 minute addition.
You could also add bows or ribbons to finish the look if you wanted to. I am loving the rustic vibe it has right now but it is so easy to customize.

Curious to know how you handle live greenery on mantles & railings. Ours above mantle looks dried out but wasn’t sure if I needed to spritz it with water slightly & concerned about damage to wood.
Courtney says
I think if it is already dried out- I would just leave it if it is safe – be careful around wood burning fireplaces- or remove. The misting or spritzing with water won’t do much once it has dried out.
