Easter Table Stories
Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house we go is from a winter occasion song but it always comes to mind in spring. When I was growing up, Easter was usually celebrated at my grandparents home. We would all pile in the car in the morning and I would stare out the window at the scenery in anticipation as we drove up into the mountains. It seemed like it took much longer to get there but once we reached the fire station and the small roads, I knew we were getting close.

Today, I am sharing a bit of nostalgia with a story along with a table setting and floral arrangement for Easter or spring.
The barely 2 lane road wound around the tall trees through the woods and believe it or not, it did have a bridge over a river as we meandered along. As the road would start dropping down towards the bridge, my dad wouldn’t slow down as we went across so that our stomachs would do a flip flop. Just beyond that bridge, the road continued on up the mountain and near the top was where my grandparents house was.

Wearing a pretty dress, stockings and fancy shoes happened at Easter time. I can remember running through their property to find all the eggs that the Easter bunny had hidden and filling up my little basket. And who else remembers these type of Easter rabbits?

My grandmother would set the table and bake all the favorite foods and there was always a plate full of deviled eggs -which were favorites. Our gatherings weren’t formal in the sense of fancy or grand- but they were filled with nods to the past with pieces that were handed down, old family recipes and details on the table that were special. Along with all the fun and oodles of chocolate candy that came along with Easter -I have a heart full of smiles, memories and fondness thinking about when we would gather. While our life was not uncomplicated growing up – such is the way with divorce, remarriages and blending families- whenever we set out on the road to grandmas house, it was always special and I knew the day would fill me up with love.

Story time aside, I think bringing out the nod to your grandmothers garden or great-grandmother by setting the table with favorite pieces is a wonderful way to incorporate those memories from yesteryear and create new memories with them now.

Lovely Layers of Nostalgia
A vintage cloth. Place settings from the past and little details are part of what create memorable settings for your guests. But the most important thing is how the table makes them feel. Does it invite memories of their own by reminding them of their own childhood gatherings? Or maybe it reminds them of the gatherings they created with their own children or inspires them to start a new tradition now.
Vintage Mix & Mingle
This setting isn’t complicated- it is full of favorites and pretty things and mingled all together, it creates a simple and sweet, romantic look. The choice of old fashioned flowers are romantic favorites from the garden and local grocery store.
Tip: For a unique look and talking point on the table- toss the traditional vase aside and fill a vintage vessel with your flowers.

Place setting magic
The place settings are mingled vintage with a dash of romance in the ribbon details to tie the flatware neatly.
Tip: Unexpected touches bring whimsy and a sprinkle of magic to the everyday settings.

All together, these simple vintage bits work to create a simple yet charming and nostalgic inspired setting that your guests will love.

Do you have a special memory from childhood that inspires you to create beauty now?

What a lovely post. Makes my heart feel good.
Love hearing that Suzanne- thank you!
Beautiful Easter Table Courtney. I love the reminder that I can use my rosemary sprigs (which are now blooming) tied with a lovely piece of ribbon to adorn the napkins. I think I might also use a napkin fold to make bunny ears. Every year I think I’m going to do it and run out of time or forget. Another reason to set the table the day before (minus the rosemary until the day of). Happy Easter!
Love that idea Linda!
