We toured an old victorian home a few weeks ago that was full of character and charm and original details. I was enamored instantly. From the old doors, plaster walls and well loved wood floors to the worn staircase with big old balusters and original wavy glass windows-this house was a renovation dream. And while I wandered through each room and redesigned them in my mind, I took note of how lovely the simplest of details were as well.
Several of the rooms had just a couple old lace curtains covering the windows. And I was smitten immediately with the simplicity and charm they brought. I instantly thought of breezes coming in through the open window, sending the curtains billowing inside. I love the little bit of privacy they brought but that they also allowed the sunshine to splash in onto the floor.
There was a nostalgic romantic feeling that they brought to the room, even though there was no furniture, it felt welcoming and inviting.
So I decided I needed more lace curtains on more windows in our home. We already have them in our entry porch area and now, I am scouring every thrift shop curtain room and keeping an eye on marketplace and shopping to find some that have the look.
Why Add Lace Curtains To Your Home
- Because if you love victorian romantic style or nostalgic interiors, lace curtains are delightful for those styles. Think about fringed lace or scalloped lace for an even more boho type look.
- Light filtering while adding privacy. I love that a little layer of lace allows the sunshine to stream on in while providing some ‘blur’ from the outside for privacy.
- They can be layered inside other curtains without taking away from the design. Simply add in between your traditional curtains for a lovely touch.
- Add them at half height like a cafe curtain for a sweet country charm or full length for more drama.
- Put them on French Doors for a sweet touch that is easy to change if you want to.
- Lace comes in so many patterns and styles, you can find one that fits your aesthetic- from simple to floral to patterns like stripes or blocks.
- They allow gentle breezes to come through while providing filtering and privacy.
If you like lace and the lovely look that it brings, the question is why not put them up and enjoy them?
Here are some options I found for getting the look right away, and of course, shopping the secondhand markets might score you some vintage lace as well. You can also use scarves, tablecloths and bits of fabric if you can’t find the lace pattern you love in curtain form.
Small Floral Lace is dainty and delicate and has a romantic scalloped edging
Intricate Floral Pattern Lace brings more texture and more filtering. It is a heavier option with a similar look.
Ruffled Lace is lovely for a more romantic look that drapes beautifully.
On Doors
In our entry, we have lace on the French doors to provide privacy and sweet look. You can simply add rods at the top of the windows on the door, and allow them to drape freely, or add a rod on the bottom as well. Alternatively, you can just put a curtain rod above the doors if you prefer also.
