You know those big old hat boxes full of blooming beauties that you see on specialty florist websites? They are so gorgeous- and who wouldn’t want one as a gift? I have made my own hat box flower arrangements before- but I bumped into something recently that made creating those even easier. And today it is all about that secret find and how to create the easiest DIY hat box flower arrangement.
DIY Hat Box Flower Arrangements
This started with those 1/2 price Valentines flowers that my husband brought home for me last week. I needed some vases to plop them into and grabbed something that I had used for a recent holiday photo shoot. A set of hat box. I trimmed and plopped and set the boxes on the counter and a few hours later my husband said
‘Are you going to put those into water?’ I replied that they already were.
‘Oh you put a vase of water inside?’
‘Nope not this time.’ I smiled.
You see, these hat boxes came with a little secret inside- so no vase required. But of course, a vase of water tucked inside is something that you can absolutely do. I have done that before when creating flower box arrangements- as you can see with this ranunculus- they were in a glass vase that was placed inside.
Flower Hat Box
It all started when I was looking for sets of boxes for pretty packages under a Christmas tree. You can see the red ones I ordered peeking out of the corner here.
I actually found several beautiful color and style options with cute ribbons or tassels and ordered a few of them to make sure the color saturation was what I was looking for.
When they arrived- some of the boxes arrived with a plastic insert already inside. I mean, beautiful packages under the tree AND simple to use for flowers? So perfect.
How to Create
Simply add a block of florist foam or fill the container with a bit of water and then arrange your flowers. Since these flowers aren’t wandering all over town and just moving in between rooms in our house- I simply filled the bottom with water and called it good. For something you will transport to gift- I would use foam. You don’t want water splashing onto the cardboard box.
Clip and arrange your flowers to fill the box depending on if you want them to be tightly packed or more loose and full. There is not right or wrong way- you are the artist – just let your creation ‘bloom’. I know a play on words- but it is exactly what you should do – if you are happy with it – it is perfect.

I don’t see that plastic inserts are included to those to which you linked. I checked out the cream colored option. Such a good idea, though.

It is the same ones that I ordered so I believe they should have the inserts unless they changed the listing in the past month.
