There is always something to be learned right? Maybe sometimes you don’t even realize what it is you are learning while you learn it. But you look back and voila- you might find there is something learned each day. Today is all about what thrifting teaches you. Of course there are the obvious things- like how to hunt for treasures and know what a good deal is but there are some other lessons too that maybe you didn’t think about. Let’s jump in.
3 Things Thrifting Treasures Has Taught Me
#1. How to Find your Own Style in a Mish-Mash of Style Options
Oh this is a big one. I mean, think about those thrift store shelves full of plates and platters. You could find probably 2 dozen different sets of plates, 10 different types of platters and even glassware- don’t get me started on the abundance of varieties that you can find all grouped together on a bookcase. But you know that is where you can find Your style. Your look. Your own unique mish-mash of pieces that speak to you.

Of course, you will gravitate towards those always on repeat favorites. ( I am looking at you Limoges!) But the fun thing is to see how sometimes something that isn’t necessarily absolutely spot on ‘you’ stands out and starts chattering to you.
What I love most is sorting through the various pieces and finding something that inspires me. Sometimes that is several sets that I am excited about- and they don’t even have to necessarily go together in style, likeness or age- but they work together for a unique mingle. The best part? Those thrifted dishes are usually inexpensive and you can enjoy your own unique look on the table. Almost guaranteed that no one else will have the exact same mingle and mix that you do- so go forth and be your own kind of fabulous.

#2. The Thrill of the Hunt Takes Time
I marched into the thrift store this morning in search of a charming vintage light for our laundry room. I only knew of one thrift store that would likely have anything that would talk to me- The Re-Store. And yep- there were 3 that whispered sweet nothings in my ear. I chose one that I felt fit the space the best (and that was only $12- stay tuned for more) but most often- you don’t bump into what you are looking for day one. You have to stop in and peruse the shelves often. And you have to sort through all the stacks and bins and even then you may not find that elusive thing you are in search of. What I have learned is that sometimes it is meant to be and there it is just waiting for you- and other times, it the hunt that keeps on keeping on for a bit and keeps you looking.

While I love bringing those treasures home right away- just something about that instant gratification! I do love the thrill of the hunt too. The not knowing when you might find it- or if you might find something different in place of (or addition to) Either way- thrifting for treasures teaches you patience in shopping and finding treasures.

#3. Thrifting helps create a home (or table or outfit, etc) that is uniquely You
Something I love about finding things for the house at the thrift stores is finding bits and pieces from different ages, styles and overall aesthetics and mingling them all together to create something that is uniquely you. That set of bistro chairs from the 50’s with a farmhouse table from the 20’s or the mismatched embroidered scraps of fabric used as napkins on the table. The similar but slightly different chandeliers paired together or the comfy chair with velvet and fringe from the 20’s with the slipcovered sofas that were new last year. The wall of collected paintings or old straw hats and even the little bits like the stacks of old books that don’t all go together in a set- but work together beautifully in their patina.

It is all about the mingle and creating a vignette, a style, a room or even just a moment in your home that is uniquely your eye putting things together. Toss out the ‘rules’ and go with what you love and brings you joy every time you see it. You can’t go wrong.
Yes, that is me holding one of our sweet hens Sage- but this setting up in the barn? It is FULL of different vintage thrifted bits. On the table. The fireplace background. The baubles on the tree. The brass candlestick holders. The chairs and even the drapers table. None of them necessarily ‘go together’ and yet- they do. In their own unique mingle.

I have so many other things I could add to this post- the treasures hunts whether they are in a field in Texas or in the thrifts in town always have something more than just treasures to offer you. I am thinking maybe I will start a new series for the holidays about thrifting vintage holiday treasures with more tidbits.
If you love bargain prices as much as I do – you might want to grab a few of my books! They are currently Buy 2 get 1 Free- and a couple of them also have a coupon in a addition so paired with a coupon are even less expensive – my first book comes out to around $17. But today is the last day I believe – shop my books by clicking on each photo below.
Happy Wednesday friends.
