Cozy. It is a word that has been on repeat and trending a lot in the past few years. And for good reason. When the whole world went crazy in 2020- home became our haven more than ever. And I don’t know about you, I found new hobbies & things that filled up spaces I didn’t realize were missing. Like my sweet chickens, gardening more and creating some more inward focused habits. So creating a nurturing cozy room that brought all the feelings and cozy things from childhood memories became a big thing. The warmth of being wrapped in a blanket by the fire while watching Saturday morning cartoons. My mom reading me a book before bed. Playing in my childhood backyard and being close enough to run inside for dinner when the sun set.etc.
Creating a cozy room
Creating a cozy homes and cozy rooms became more than just finding bits and things at the store to dress your walls or create a vignette on a sideboard. Creating a cozy home is more about creating a nurturing haven where you find a bit of peace in the chaos. And that ‘cozy feeling’ and the simpler way of life has become a whole lifestyle.
Today we are talking about 5 simple ways to create a cozy room and home that feels cozy and inviting- and doing it in just a snap instead of redoing the whole shebang.
Candle Ambiance
Whether it is a table with gathered up candles, fairy light strings, a twinkling chandelier or a fire in the fireplace or ‘fire’ screensaver on the t.v. screen – ambiance is key to creating a cozy room. My favorite way to bring in the cozy is with candles and a fire- but in rooms that don’t have a fireplace- candles are on repeat.
Ambiance: Create a ‘cozy’ feeling with candles in your room. Faux candles are perfect for placing anywhere and not worrying about safety- plus you can find some that have a remote or timer for ambiance on repeat without any thought.
Something to wrap up in
A warm chunky knit throw. A favorite quilt from Grandma. Even your favorite wearable blanket snugglie -(literally my go to attire every morning and evening) All are perfect for wrapping up and chasing the chill away. When they aren’t in use- fold those blankets on the arm or back of sofa as part of a cozy room design or tuck into a basket nearby to grab as needed.
Something warm: Whatever it is that makes you feel warm, safe and ‘cozy’ – bring it on. This crochet blanket is as pretty as it is ‘weighty’ so when you layer it on while on the sofa – it adds a bit of that ‘weighted blanket’ feeling which is very cozy.
Flowers
I mean, for me, flowers also bring cozy. While I realize not everyone feels that way, it is definitely something worth mentioning. I have shared 2 different ways of bringing flowers into your room in this styling. Fresh on the mantel in small vases and faux on the coffee table in a bucket. Whichever style or type of flowers that speak to you- are perfect.
Cozy Underfoot
Rugs bring another layer of cozy comfort in a room. Admittedly, I don’t do rugs all the time. My personal preference for keeping the house clean and I prefer hardwood floors and the look of it. But I sometimes add a rug to rooms like the bedroom, the living room (on occasion) and attic room- but generally, prefer simple wood floors. That said-if you don’t enjoy all those other things in your home- bring in a rug and enjoy the warmth it brings.
Bring on the pillows
Throw pillows on the sofa. Squishy big pillows to sink into gathered around the game table, etc- bring in some comfy pillows that bring a soft place to land and cozy into. I found a set of pillows years ago that I love on the sofas and in the bedroom-they are squishy, cozy, oversized and so comfortable to settle into. So for changing the look with the seasons or my design whims, I bring in different pillow covers. Easy and inexpensive way to change the whole look in a snap.
Curtains
A bonus idea? Curtains. Layers of lovely curtains.
Recently, we have all seemed to move away from ‘cozy’ curtains in the house. It has all been simple white sheer. I get it. I love simple white sheer curtains as much as the next person. And truth be told- Gasp- I don’t even have traditional lined and pleated curtains on some windows because I enjoy the open look. So sheer definitely fits the bill there. But you know what my preferred sheer look is? Something with some texture. I love cotton crochet. Macrame. Handmade lace, etc. So beautiful and simple.
Of course you can also use traditional curtains to bring in some layers of patterns, color or just ‘cozy’. There is no right or wrong way to go about designing Your room- so do what makes you happy!
