When you find a pair of treasures at the thrift store and right away have an idea for them – but have no idea if that is what they were intended for- do you buy them or think about it? Well, if you have been reading my blog for a bit you probably already know that I see things with potential all the time- and so, of course they came home with me. I kind of figure with vintage items you can repurpose them and at least they are being enjoyed rather than in the garbage. So these may have originally been exactly this use or maybe not. Tell me what you think of these cast iron ‘wall vases’.

Cast Iron Wall Vases?

They look like a vase to me. They are heavy cast iron, hollow inside and have a spot for nail to hold them. But that is the thing that throws it off a tad – the spot for the nail. It is huge- a big open area. Not for a small nail that would usually be a nail sized hole. Though as you can see, it does work.

When originally found – I didn’t question the idea or functionality but I do believe they will hold water just fine. I am showing them with dried flowers which I think works perfectly as well.

I did a google image search of them to see what might pop up- it was nothing but random hardware and car replacement parts. Which I don’t think is what they are. Though, I could see that open area kind of resembles something that may use a socket type piece or something along those lines Usually with a wall hanging spot it is just a small hole.
Whatever they were originally used as or intended for – they are being wall vases at the moment. I posted them on instagram and had a lot of folks say a vase of some kind so I am guessing that is what they were originally as well and the large hole area is just unique to the style.

They may well be for flowers, but considering The use for the smaller version, they could be used for long matches or small kindling for a wood stove.
I think they would work really well for long matches! Great idea Mary!
I think they may have been used in a cemetery. Lovely!
A couple folks on instagram wondered about that too.
i believe those are attached to HEADSTONES for flowers. Probably very old indeed!
they resemble some old gravestones that use to have something to put FLOWERS in…
I also think they may have been for cemetery use.
They look kinda like the antique FLOWER holder we bought for our ’37 Jag…saw them at the Car Museum in FORT Lauderdale, FL. franki
I wonder if they were used in an old stone church? Probably not on an alter as they looked rather utilitarian in dark cast metal. They may have held flowers possibly on the pews as you have it on a wooden surface. Regardless they are unique and lovely!
I’m a long time subscriber and I have a bet going on with myself on whT your next book will be🧐😜No idea why the all caps🤦🏼♀️
