We took a bit of a break from the travel adventures- it has been a bit of a busy week over here and I am just now catching up on all the things. Last we talked about our recent trip- we were in Italy and getting ready to head over to France. We took the train to Avignon and stayed the night there before renting a car and heading out to the French countryside to a little French village. We didn’t know where we would be staying that night- we just went in that direction and stopped at a few little picturesque French villages along the way.
French Countryside
We took the backroads through France and it was spectacular. Just like Italy, the beautiful countryside captivated us as we drove from Avignon to Montpellier and then took small roads up to several villages in the more rural countryside areas. One of the places we wanted to stay was in a medieval French village but we weren’t sure just where that village would be yet.
Some of the highlights of the drive were the one lane country roads and the charming stone houses and barns that dotted the landscape. The fields were lush green- it actually rained a bit while we were in France and we were told it had been quite the rainy spring. Clearly the foliage and fields loved it with their vibrant colors. A favorite for me on the drive that day was driving through the tree lined streets and meeting a chicken that was literally crossing the road.
Medieval French Village House
We explored and drive most of the day that first day on a mission to get up into the Southwestern regions of France where we were focusing our trip this time. As it got to be evening, we pulled over and looked for a place to stay that night and found a most incredible apartment in a medieval French village. We were not familiar with the village so it was perfect for exploring a new spot- we booked it and got on the road.
Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val
We stayed in a most delightful medieval village and in an apartment on the top floor of a village house. The apartment was such a beautiful place to stay. With big old beams, stone walls and so much charm- I was absolutely in love and while we were there, I was living my French village house dreams!
We wandered the village in the rain and enjoyed soaking up all the beautiful patina and charm and then cooked dinner and relaxed in this beautiful little spot.
The view from the back windows- so beautiful!
The village itself did not lack anything- it was picturesque and full of charm around every corner.
We brought our own food to cook with since we had a car and we prefer to cook rather than dine out – especially with following a keto vegetarian diet.
The owner of the apartment we stayed in was wonderful. She had lived in the U.S. for 40+ years and had recently moved back to her native France- and we chatted all about life in France and all of her tips. We really enjoyed meeting her and staying with her. I highly recommend a stop if you are in this part of France. Stay tuned for our next stop and the oops that came along with it. I will ask my husband to look up the name of where we stayed at share.

Hi Courtney!
Do you have any information about a southeastern French village called Capendu? It’s right outside of Carcassonne. My parents were from there. I would love to know more about it. My parents have passed away and I don’t remember the stories that they told about it.
Thank you!
Violaine
