Apples drizzled with salt water caramel and sprinkled with chopped almonds? Yes, please.
I am a huge caramel apple loving kind of girl. One of my favorite treats when on vacation is to find a local sweets shop and indulge in a caramel covered apple. Add in a layer of melted chocolate and nuts and I am pretty much in love.
As I shared the other day, my daughter and her fiancé are staying in the cottage currently after being evacuated from South Lake Tahoe. And my daughter just so happened to have worked in a chocolate shoppe making caramel apples a couple of years ago. So you know when the theme for this weeks recipe tour was about apples- that was the first thing I thought of making with her.
This recipe is so simple and easy- and easy to customize. For example, we drizzled the caramel on the top of the apples after dipping- instead of dipping again to add a little more caramel in places without adding too much. We also sprinkled the almonds on the tops mostly rather than coating the whole apple. I mean, it is like indulging and enjoying without over -indulging.
Caramel Drizzled Apples
Step 1: Unwrap your caramels and place them into a saucepan.
Step 2: Add 2 tbsp of water to the caramels and melt on low-medium heat stirring constantly until caramels are melted.
Step 3: Skewer & Dip your apples
I used cleaned twigs from the apple tree for the skewers and simply pushed them into the apples- of course, you can use wood skewers or straw skewers as well. To dip the apples- lean your pot to one side and dip your apple and roll it in the caramel several times to coat it.
Step 4: Place your dipped apple on parchment paper or on a muffin wrapper and drizzle another layer of caramel on the top. This helps to re-coat the top which tends to start to drip down and puddle if the caramel is too warm and it also provides a little extra yummy layer as well.
Step 5: Sprinkle your almonds onto the caramel- and use your fingers to press them into the caramel just a bit if you want even more.
Step 6: Refrigerate for about 10 minutes to set the caramel and serve.
These are so good – and what I love about the extra drizzle of caramel on the top is that you don’t have to be a chocolatier or candy maker and make them look perfect- to have them Be perfect. So if your first dip of caramel drips too much- no worries- just layer another drizzle on the top. The more the merrier. These apples are covered in gooey layers of caramel and nuts and are absolutely delicious.
Here is a recipe for printing if you would like to try to make some of these yourself. And don’t miss the other apple recipes my friends are sharing today. Happy Tuesday all.
