Peony Rose
A ‘peony rose’ . Big blooms with lots of ruffles and charm- peonies are often referred to as ‘roses’ and called ‘thornless roses’. But they are really a plant all their own.
Big ruffly flowers with an abundance of petals and an old fashioned delicious scent – Peonies are flower fan favorites for many reasons. There is nothing quite like a vase full of them to brighten up a room and fill it with a delicious scent. One thing about them that every peony lover can agree on is that peony season just does not last long enough. And so, the quest for ruffly peony lookalike beauties to enjoy all year long is ongoing. And that is where these beautiful garden roses come in.
Garden Roses
You might remember that a couple of years ago I planted some garden roses that were said to be so much like peonies that they fooled all kinds of flower lovers. The blooms the first year were quite small- so while they looked beautiful and very full- they certainly did not have that big abundant peony size. This year however, even though they have been quite late starting to bloom- they are knocking my socks off with their size and beauty & scent. And while I wandered the garden clipping a few roses and peonies to bring inside before the rain- and noticed just how similar they are when they are side by side. I thought it would be fun to show you both of them and see what you think too.

Garden Fresh

A garden fresh arrangement full of beautiful blooming beauty- this is filled with several types of garden roses and peonies. But which is which?
Peony

Peonies are in a class all their own- they come in so many colors and sizes. This pink peony is Dr. Alexander Fleming and is a lovely addition in the garden- and in an arrangement. For more on the peony varieties we planted last year– you can find that HERE

And right under the note above is the lovely The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild rose. Full of ruffle charm and a pretty shade of pink. Can you believe how similar they look in ruffles, shape, color and size? I am obsessed with how beautiful they look together and on their own.
Peonies & Roses
Here is another look at them together and labeled so you can see how similar they are.

If you are looking for a show stopper rose that resembles a peony to add to the garden- highly recommend this one. And they will keep you in peony like blooms all summer long.

I am on the lookout for more lookalikes of course- but this one has been a stunner this year- so full, ruffly and big! What others would you suggest?
I am going to purchase the bamboo garden markers to put in cupcakes, breads and the like which I bake for my sweetheart! I plan to write love notes on them. Will be fun, especially if he eats the goodies while in the garden. Thank you, Courtney, for the lovely things you find. Makes life even more wonsderful!
The Rose look so beautiful, the Peonies Always Eye candy.
Your roses and peonies are gorgeous. I am going to get some.
I planted a David Austin rose, “Olivia” And have high hopes for a Peony wanna-be look. 🤞 The Mr. Fairchild rose looks remarkable and if you hadn’t told me it wasn’t a peony I think that would have been my first guess.

What gorgeous roses. I am working on growing some roses at my new house. They have taken off. I need to add some new bushes in my garden.
After all the rain in California, the gift is large fully, budded Roses. I am anxiously awaiting the grand opening, especially after seeing yours! What a season of show!
I absolutely love peonies, and Roses, and this is a beautiful one. IF you want to see truly gorgeous roses, go to etsy. There are many growers there that have truly beautiful and unusual roses that you just don’t find anywhere.
Gorgeous! Sorry if i’m missing it, but can you please clarify the lightest pink flower in the center of the darker pink peonies and roses?
Thank you!
Hi Joanne! That rose is called Earth Angel – another delightful ruffly rose!
Intoxicating…I am sure no!!! franki
Please tell me how you keep your Mr Fairchild roses upright. The stems on mine are so weak yhey all just lie on the ground. The BLOSSOMS are lovely but they wont stand up. I have had them 3 years and prine and fertili regularly but ghe stems dont get any stronger! Help!!
Did you Winter Prune your roses by at leas 1/3? Generally causes for this kind of issue is lots of fast growth, which means you’ve given it plenty of water and more than enough -if not too much -fertilizer causing too fast growth. When You deadhead this spring, cut down a little further ( stilll at the 5 leaf) on the week stems, use only organic fertilizer, and not so much or as often Let the rose bush stress just a tiny bit. Happy blooming!
